Name of your website?Eugene Ryan Counselling and Psychotherapy
Your name?
Eugene Ryan
Your Location (city, etc)
Dublin 2
Please give us a short summary of your website?
The website promotes my Counseling and Psychotherapy service, giving some information on me and my work. It also provides some links to websites associated with Counselling or Mental Health generally, including the website of the practice (Fitzwilliam Centre) where I work with some colleagues.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
Because many people use this way of looking up information and resources.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
Coolranny.com - launched in 2002 when I was a senior psychotherapy trainee.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I used the name of a field on a farm owned for several generations of my ancestors. As they have all died out, this name was going to die with them, and I wanted to give it a new lease of life. The field had properties which I saw as having parallels with the work of counselling. It seemed the animals frequented the field more than others - so they appeared to be nourished there - in terms of safety and comfort, as well as for actual food.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
I wanted to give a sense of connection, of a deeper connection within ourselves, as "human animals", who also have a connection to the earth and the universe beyond.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
I would like to see the Coolranny name continue with my therapy work, and ultimately, it may become associated with healing work in Ireland.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
Very well. I trust that what I put on my website connects with individuals who may have a particular openness (either consciously or subconsciously) to a certain spiritual view where we are all connected - humans, animals, plants, earth, cosmos.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
Very little. I believe that people looking at a counselling/psychotherapy website are more drawn by simplicity of layout and content, rather than be bombarded by a lot of information and "flashy" content.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
It's not going to get really big, really quickly. I believe in an approach of organic, sustainable growth. As human animals, I believe we have a difficulty (at a very deep level in our psyches) with things that move, or enlarge, very quickly. These things contribute to trauma. We have enough of that, in my opinion.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
As regards the website ... none really. I've enjoyed the process all along. I am glad to be able to say that!
What has been your biggest challenge?
Trusting. Trusting that what efforts I put in, would eventually bear fruit.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Having links (reciprocal links) on associated websites.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
It always takes more time to do updates than I expect.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
Since 2002. I foresee it running until I retire. And I don't expect to ever, really, retire!!
How was it to doing this "interview" ?
I am surprised at how much I enjoyed sharing these thoughts. I don't know how they are going to be used, but I look forward to seeing the fruits!
