How do you avoid stress burnout?

By Dr. Jennifer Baxt at 03/23/09 11:42

Good and bad stress can both be created by just about any situation. Depending on what the situation is, it can either be easy to deal with or very difficult.

Good stress can be great for you because it can help get something done, such as a project for work or school. Good stress can also be good for the heart, because it is caused by excitement. Things such as getting married, having your first kid or even graduating from high school.

Bad stress is stress that has no real benefit, and no real reason to be there other than to create problems for you.

Stress that can create problems, or bad stress is caused by a hard day at work, a fight with your significant other, or hard financial times.  When not dealt with, stress can continue to build up, eventually leading to becoming irrational, depressed,  or losing interest in hobbies, your job and even your friends.

Not taking the time to help yourself, to collect your thoughts, or just get away from a sometimes hectic world, can get to you if you have neglected to take a time out every once in a while.

Take the time to stop and pull yourself out of the daily rush. It is very important for anyone looking to ward off stress, and the eventual health results, such as these:

  • depression
  • Problems with the heart
  • Blood pressure problems
Taking time out means you taking an hour out of every day, or a day once a week to do what you would like to do. Maybe you have a hobby you have not taken the time for in a while, or maybe you would just like a quiet day to yourself to read, draw or go to a spa.  Whatever it is that you want to do during that time is not important, as long as it is something relaxing that you like to do.

For anyone who lives a fairly busy life without too many breaks, it is easy to be a little lost at what they would like to do with time off. When you don't give yourself many opportunities to do something on your own time, hobbies and other interests are not developed.

A good place to start may be online, where one can speak with an online counselor about finding ways to deal with their stress. Online counseling might seem extreme, but it isn’t if you think about it. An online therapist can easily be a guide to help a person to learn ways of dealing with their stress, and help deciding what they could be doing with their time. Online therapy can be a great help to someone looking to make time for themselves, and live a more relaxed life.
