How to Become Optimistic

11/03/09 07:05

Being skeptical can surely have its benefits. For example, people will have a more difficult time taking advantage of you.But while this is useful at times, getting pessimistic over just everything isn't going to be healthy for your well-being.

In contrast, optimists always see the light at the end of the dark tunnel. They do know how to hope, and they do know how to wait. You can go to the optimists' side even if you have been a pessimist during your entire life. It will be difficult, but it certainly is possible.

Wondering how you can see that glass of water as half-full and not half-empty? Well here are some tips:

  • Embrace the world around you. A lot of pessimists think that the world is out there to conspire against them. While I do not advocate over-friendliness, it does pay to be cheery around the people who matter. At the same time, surround yourself with the people who can give you the positive vibes.
  • Determine what makes you pessimist and do something about it. This may take a lot of forms. Perhaps it may be a terrible experience that you had when you were young, in which case you should probably consult a counselor for guidance. Attribute your negative to those particular experiences and never to the world at large, because the world is more than those negative experiences. It is beyond that.
  • Learn that the past is not an indicator of the future. Your past experiences may be bad, but do understand that it does not mean you will have the same terrible experiences in the future. Make your past a learning experience that will guide you in your future, and not a reminder of what will happen. Wallowing in the past only creates unhappiness and pessimism.
  • Be patient. It takes time to change one's outlook in life. Do not blame yourself for your negativity. Instead, just focus on how you can turn things around with the right attitude. You still have an entire lifetime ahead of you.
